Jagiellonian University in Kraków (JUK) is the oldest and the leading university in Poland founded in 1364. The Institute of European Studies (IES) makes part of the Faculty of International and Political Studies at JUK. IES is known for its interdisciplinary approach, combining the perspectives of anthropology, economy, cultural studies, political science and international relations, history, law and sociology on Europe. IES participates in research networks and international consortia, most notably within Horizon Europe. Educationally, IES hosts BA and MA programmes in European Studies in Polish and a variety of BA, study abroad and international MA in English.
Role within SHAPEDEM-EU
Within the SHAPEDEM-EU project, JUK leads work within Work Package 5 EU Member States’ democracy support & democratic practices in the Eastern and Southern Neighbourhoods which undertakes a systematic mapping of selected EU Member States’ democracy support in the EU’s Eastern and Southern Neighborhoods, both at state level and by civil society actors. JUK researchers contribute also to other Work Packages – most notably Work Package 1 with conceptual frames of the project as well as to Work Package 4 mapping the EU’s democracy support practices and Work Package 6 analysing selected external actors’ role in democracy support. Kraków’s team also cooperates within Work Package 2 and Work Package 3 and participates in dissemination of the project results.
