Rethinking and Reshapingthe EU’s Democracy Supportin Its Eastern and Southern Neighbourhoods

SHAPEDEM-EU hosts its 2nd Democracy Dinner in Brussels

On November 22, 2023, SHAPEDEM-EU held its second Democracy Roundtable – organised by consortium partner Carnegie Europe Foundation (CEF). The roundtable focused on the EU’s recent migration deals and their implications for the Union’s democracy support policies in the Southern Neighbourhood. Participants delved into the relationship between democracy support and migration management, discussing their compatibility and the extent to which democracy support criteria can be effectively integrated into EU migration deals.

The dinner featured opening remarks by Amine Ghali, Program Director at the Al Kawakibi Democracy Transition Center in Tunis, Camino Mortera-Martinez, Head of the Brussels office of the Centre for European Reform, and Eve Geddie, Head of Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office and Director of Advocacy.

As part of WP7, this Democracy Roundtable was the second of a series of six (two per year) Brussels-based roundtables with policy makers and democracy activists. The unique objective of these dinners is to provide a complementary format of exchange on improvements to the EU’s democracy support practices, bringing together EU officials with stakeholders in a closed-door event.
